About

My name is Chris Johnson. I’ve been working in BI for the last six years or so. I did a university degree in Pholisophy, Politics and Economics, and my first real job after that was as a data analyst working at Confused.com. From there I’ve progressed into BI development, and discovered I really like the technical SQL Server side of things, as well as the business analyst parts of the job.

I’ve found that there’s two main ways people get into BI. Either you’re a DBA of some sort and you come over to BI from a very technical background, or you’re an analyst like I was. In my case I started off writing basic T-SQL queries and producing Excel reports. From there, I moved onto looking at basic database design, stored precedures and Reporting Services reports. And form there I got more involved with the ETL process, the administration side of things and started modelling Data Warehouses.

I started this blog because from my experience, I’m an exception. Most people who come from the report writing side tend to not move on much from there, and I think it’s because of a lack of help making the jump from analyst to developer. This blog is my attempt to contribute to that help. I will be posting about aspects of SQL Server you may not have heard of, and talking about Business Intelligence in general.
